History of Raiganj Coronation High School
Raiganj Coronation High School derives its name from the coronation of King George V, yet the institution did not emerge suddenly as a new establishment. Its roots trace back to Raiganj Middle English School, later known as Raiganj M.E. School, which began its academic journey around the year 1905.
At that time, Raiganj was a small village. With the aim of spreading education in the region, a group of socially conscious individuals inspired by nationalist ideals envisioned the establishment of a modern educational institution. In pursuit of this objective, a Congress meeting was convened in which the distinguished educationist Kulada Kanta Ghosh participated; he would later serve as the Founder Secretary of the school and play a pivotal role in its development.
During the British period, and in the context of King George V's coronation in 1911, the institution evolved into Raiganj Coronation M.E. School and subsequently into Raiganj Coronation High School. In due course, the school secured affiliation from the University of Calcutta. Following this milestone, the first batch of students from the institution appeared for public examinations in 1916, marking a significant step in its academic progression.
Although established during the colonial era, the school's association with the national awakening was notable. Its students contributed meaningfully to the freedom movement. Among them was Sukumar Siddhanta, who joined the Bengal Regiment and was later court-martialed in the Mesopotamian theatre due to his opposition to British authority. Over the years, many alumni of the school have gone on to occupy prominent ministerial and administrative positions, while numerous others have distinguished themselves across diverse spheres of society.
The school's influence has extended beyond academics into cultural life as well. The world of cinema, for instance, saw representation from the institution in the form of the notable figure Shri Rabin Majumdar. From its earliest years, the school earned recognition for nurturing distinguished individuals who brought pride to the institution.
Such was its reputation that, during an official visit, the DI(S.E) of the time observed that Coronation High School could be regarded as one of the most prominent and productive institutions of the region.
The campus of Raiganj Coronation High School also served as a cradle for higher education in the locality. Institutions such as Raiganj University (formerly Raiganj University College) and Raiganj Teachers' Training College trace their beginnings to this very campus, underscoring the school's foundational role in the region's educational development.
Academically, the institution has consistently maintained a tradition of excellence. Students of the school have secured outstanding positions in secondary and higher secondary examinations across different periods, bringing honour to the institution. The technical stream introduced in the school has likewise earned commendation, while in the field of sports the achievements and contributions of its students have been equally significant.
Building upon this rich legacy, Raiganj Coronation High School has successfully completed its centenary and now advances with confidence toward its 125th year, continuing its journey with dignity, tradition, and renewed commitment to educational excellence.
